Paint Instructions
The Nordic Style Paint Collection
All Nordic Style paints, glazes and varnishes are water-based and environmentally friendly.
For the first time specialist paints, coloured glazes, and varnishes, all suitable for furniture, make Nordic Style’s unique, hand-finished look easy to achieve without calling in the experts.
To achieve the Nordic Style look, one must firstly determine the condition of the furniture to be painted. If the piece has a wax finish you must ensure that the wax is completely removed before painting. For greater adhesion and to minimise discolouring, all bare wood must be primed. Varnished or painted areas should be gently hand-sanded, washed with sugar soap and then rinsed with clean water but do not require a coat of primer.
Many of the most satisfying results come from renovating an old table or chair, so it may well be worthwhile securing all joints with a good quality glue and filling in any holes with appropriate filler before painting.
Nordic Style Furniture Paint is self-undercoating, greatly reducing additional expense and working time. The paint is best applied with a high quality synthetic brush. Always lay the paint on in the same direction and relax: tension in the arm can reproduce itself in the painting. However, for large flat areas, a foam roller may be used. For greater depth of colour it is always recommended to apply two coats, sanding in between with wet and dry glass paper where an ultra smooth finish is required. When the coats are completely dry (up to 16 hours) apply Nordic Style Furniture Glaze. Using a soft brush paint the piece with the glaze trying to make the coating as even as possible. Whilst the glaze is still wet draw a dry dragging brush over the surface in one direction leaving an even, soft and subtle dragging effect. The glaze is deliberately slow drying in order for you to have time to achieve the desired results; if however, a mistake is made simply wipe off the glaze with a damp cloth and start again. Once you have it right, leave the piece to dry and remember that during the next 16 hours the furniture is particularly vulnerable to damage – please be careful. After two coats of Nordic Style Furniture Varnish the piece will have the clean, crisp look of Swedish hand- painted furniture and the strength to protect your hard work.
Nordic Style Furniture Paint
The furniture paint is water-based for interior woodwork both new and previously painted.
Coverage: Approx. 8-10m2/litre per coat.
Drying Times: 4 hours. Wait 16 hours between coats.
Application: Brush or short pile/foam roller.
Nordic Style Furniture Glaze
The glaze is a water-based acrylic latex medium that produces a translucent finish. The product dries slowly, allowing time for creating the desired effect. If you make a mistake, then you can wipe the glaze off with a sponge.
Coverage: Approx. 12m2/litre per coat.
Drying Times: About 16 hours.
Application: Dragging brush (short bristles) or short pile/foam roller.
Nordic Style Furniture Varnish
A water-based, totally clear eggshell varnish for protecting painted surfaces. This varnish will not go yellow with time.
Coverage: Approx. 12m2/litre per coat.
Drying Times: Allow 16 hours between coats.
Application: Brush or short pile/foam roller.
Nordic Style Wall Paint
No primer is needed, although unpainted plaster may require a “mist” coat, a diluted coat of wall paint (approx. 10%), in order to seal the surface. Please check all guarantees before applying any latex/vinyl paint onto fresh plaster. The wall paint is a flat, water-based paint that contains no solvent additives and is, therefore suitable for sensitive areas that must be non-allergenic.
Coverage: Approx. 6-8m2/litre per coat.
Drying time: Tack free after approx. 30 mins. Wait 3 hours between coats.
Application: For a more traditional finish a brush should be used. An emulsion roller will leave an “orange peel” finish but greatly increases ease of application.
Nordic Style Floor Paint
An opaque, water-based latex paint for floors subject to normal wear.
Coverage: Approx. 6-8m2/litre per coat.
Drying time: Wait 3 hours between coats.
Application: Brush or short pile roller. Bare wood or concrete should be primed with a thinned coat (10-15% water) before two undiluted coats are applied. New concrete floors must be left at least three months before painting (please check manufacturer’s instructions as this may vary). Unpainted, old concrete must be cleaned thoroughly with spirits of salts and then rinsed thoroughly with clean water.
Nordic Style Woodwork Primer
The primer is a water-based, quick drying paint for priming new wood indoors.
Coverage: Approx. 8m2/litre per coat
Drying time: Tack free after about 1 hour. Wait 4 hours between coats.
Application: Brush of roller. In general terms only one coat of primer is required.
